              The Dance Department offers a wide variety of classes including Exploratory, Ballet, and Jazz. Dance education begins with an awareness of body movement and its creative potential for communicating meaning and self- expression. Students participate in exercises, and dance movement designed to educate them in both the practical applications and the creative interpretation of dance.  Students come into the course with a personal understanding of dance, but through the course students learn that techniques, attention to the nuances of movement, and artistic discipline enabling them to create more powerful and professional expressions. The development of the courses is based on State and National Dance Standards to ensure high academic expectations of knowledge and performance. They learn that dance is the product of intentional and intelligent physical actions. Student understanding is enhanced with the knowledge of historical and cultural models as introduced in the courses as well as developing their ability to evaluate and assess dance.  Most of all Dance can be fun. It is learning in the most open and engaging environment.
     
    Courses Offered:
    9900 Exploration of Dance (1 credit)

    Introduction to Dance provides an abbreviated introduction to ballet, modern, tap and jazz. This combined class is for those students who have never danced before and are not sure what dance form they prefer.

    9901 Introduction to Ballet-Lyrical (1 credit)
    This course provides students the opportunity to increase strength, coordination, and flexibility through this classic dance form. As the course progresses, students will engage in a deeper exploration of the art form of ballet and its benefits and will be given the opportunity to create original choreography. Prerequisites: a final grade of C or better in Introduction to Dance or permission of the teacher.
     
    9904 Modern Dance (1 credit)

    This class is a blend of ballet and jazz dance. It includes an introduction to the Horton technique. Students will be able to maximize their creative expression through this vigorous, flowing style of dance. Students will explore the creative possibilities by creating original choreographic pieces in this genre of dance. Prerequisites: a final grade of C or better in Introduction to Dance or permission of the teacher.

    9907 Introduction to Tap (1 credit)

    Students will improve their coordination and timing through this rhythmic, percussive style of dance.  As the course progresses, accuracy, clarity and speed development are ultimate goals of students enrolled in this course. Students will be given the opportunity to create choreographic works using tap dance as the slate. Prerequisites: a final grade of C or better in Introduction to Dance or permission of the teacher.

    9910 Jazz/Hip-Hop/Funk  (1 credit)

    Jazz/Hip-Hop/Funk is the American dance form that has swept the world by storm. Students’ strength, speed, agility and flexibility will be challenged with this high energy, contemporary dance form. As the course progresses, students will be given the opportunity to create their own dance pieces. Prerequisites: a final grade of C or better in Introduction to Dance or permission of the teacher.

    9902 Ballet—Lyrical 2 (1 credit)

    9905 Modern Dance 2 (1 credit)

    9908         Tap 2 (1 credit)

    9911 Jazz/Hip-Hop/Funk 2 (1 credit)These courses will be offered based upon student demand and continue the study of the form learned in the “first” course in the two-course sequence. Prerequisites: a final grade of C or better in the “first” course or permission of the teacher.
