Summer Reading:  (Further explained with questions, project requirements and due dates in file library)

    1. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer(Harper/Perennial Publisher)

    2. In addition to The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind work, students have the option of working on creative writing piece (poetry or short story).  The summer is a great time for students to be more creative and thoughtful.  We will be taking part in the Scholastic Arts and Writing Contest again, and this assignment will allow students time to think through some short story and/or poetry ideas that can be used for the contest.  The guidelines and information for submissions for this assignment can be found at
    https://www.artandwriting.org/what-we-do/the-awards/guidelines-deadlines/
    3. Students will also be responsible for the SAT words covered during the 7th grade year.  This cumulative list can be found in the file library.

Go to the summer file library on this website and click on the Incoming 8th Graders' Summer Requirements word document. Below you will see what I am looking for in your typed responses to the questions and my expectations for your selected projects.  Students will be expected to turn in their questions on the first day of school, September 5th.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Summer reading

    guidelines for you!

    1. Please make sure that all of your responses to the questions are together because you will turn them all in at once during the first week of school.

    2. Typed responses are required.

    3. Responses should answer the questions directly with support from the text and evidence of your own thinking when appropriate.

    4. Quality is what will be considered, not quantity. Most questions can be answered in a single paragraph.

    5. Overall, questions will be graded for completion. Three questions will represent your first writing grade of the year.  These questions will be announced on our first day together and a rubric will be provided.
