• The Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids Pilot Program at Springer Middle School was started in the fall of 2004 as part of an after-school program for 13 students. Their work with HFHK Founder, Thianda Manzara, led to the start of the pilot program in the spring of 2005, when 7 classes planted the newly completed courtyard garden, then harvested and ate the “fruits of their labors”. Our garden was expanded and dedicated in memory of Chef Steve Romeo who supported HFHK from the very start by helping with vegetable cooking demonstrations. Since then Springer students have planted, harvested, and tasted from the garden every spring, summer, and fall.
