• National Junior Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.

To be eligible for membership consideration, students must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.75. (Student GPA’s will be calculated by guidance after all applications are submitted.) Additionally, potential members must meet high standards of leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Students are invited to complete an application form to be considered for membership.

The Faculty Council, consisting of five members of the faculty chosen by the principal,
will review each application for the established criteria as follows:

    • Activities/Citizenship – At least one in school and one out of school activity in which you have participated while at Springer. These might include clubs, teams, musical groups, or other organizations.
    • Leadership - At least one position either elected or appointed OR membership in a leadership group such as Leader Corps.
    • Service – One or more service activities totaling five or more hours of service. Service may be performed in conjunction with one of the activities listed in Activities/Citizenship or Leadership above. Include any volunteer community service hours.

When considering candidates, character is looked at in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and cooperation with peers and faculty members. Any student who has had an in or out-of-school suspension, served Time Out, or been assigned multiple detentions will be ineligible for membership. Once selected for membership, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities. Members will also be required to attend one meeting a month during the school year while attending Springer Middle School, as well as to satisfy service hours specifically related to the NJHS.

Membership in NJHS does not guarantee membership in NHS at the high school level.
