A Brief Background on Title I

Title I is the section of the ESEA that is specifically targeted toward children in poverty. Title I is a funding resource provided by the federal government to states; states then send these funds to local school districts, who in turn allocate the monies to individual schools with high poverty rates to improve their students' academic achievement and close achievement gaps. Schools who receive Title I funding are called Title I schools.

Federal funds must be added to local and state dollars, not used to replace local and/or state dollars. BSD schools use a Schoolwide model where funds can be used across the entire school's population to improve achievement. Many types of activities can be paid for with Title I dollars, as long as they are in service to support leaning and allowable within the Schoolwide program.

Our 2014-15 Title I schools are Carrcroft, Claymont, Harlan, Maple Lane, Mt Pleasant, PS DuPont, and Talley.
