ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS
English Language Learners (ELLs) are identified after the completion of the state wide Home Language Survey using the WIDA online screeener English language proficiency test. This entry test determines eligibility and English Language Proficiency Levels (ELP) for each new ELL student that registers in our district.
In Elementary schools, ELL students are provided language support services using an inclusion/push-in model that allows ESOL teachers/tutors to provide direct language instruction and regular classroom support based on the student’s needs. Secondary schools provide structured English immersion where students are scheduled into an ESL class period and receive direct language instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each school in the Brandywine School District is assigned an ESOL teacher or tutor to work with ELL students within each building. For more information about our services and the WIDA assessments used to screen and monitor student language proficiency please click below.
