District sweeps STEAM Punk Sculpture Contest
It was a clean sweep for BSD in the 2012 STEAM Punk Sculpture Contest, with all three top prizes going to BSD students.

Concord student wins statewide essay contestCongratulations to Jack Sypher, a Concord student who won the statewide Casual for the Cause Essay Contest! Jack's winning essay was centered on the importance of voter education on the candidates and issues in an election. He will win a savings bond courtesy of the staff of the Office of the State Election Commissioner and have his winning essay read at the Mock Election Convention at Legislative Hall on November 2.

Talley student wins 2nd place in international story contestCongratulations to Jill Lindenhofen, an 8th grade IB student at Talley Middle School. Her story, You Day, won second place in an international contest and will now be used as the basis for an episode of Roam14, a television show written by teens for teens.
Two Concord students named to US Rowing Scholastic Honor Roll55 student athletes across the country were named to the 2012-2013 US Rowing Scholastic Honor Roll, and an additional 73 students earned Honorable Mention recognition. Two of those students are currently enrolled at Concord High School!

The Scholastic Honor Roll recognizes high school seniors who have excelled in both academics and rowing. The Delaware Technology Student Association (DE TSA) attended the 34th Annual National Technology Student Association Conference in Nashville, Tennessee from June 21-25. Eighty students from Concord High School, Mount Pleasant High School, and Springer Middle School competed in 110 individual and 65 team competitive events such as CAD Engineering, Fashion Design, On Demand Video, Promotional Graphics, Manufacturing Prototype, Structural Engineering, Technical Sketching and Application, Flight Endurance, Video Game Design, Inventions & Innovations, Leadership Strategies and more.
Conference Honors and Highlights
o Delaware TSA was honored for raising nearly $87,903 for the American Cancer Society.
o The American Cancer Society (ACS) recognized Concord High School with the Platinum Award for earning over $500. Mount Pleasant High School and P.S. duPont Middle School were also recognized with Purple Awards from ACS for earning over $40,000 each.
o Steven Vanderloo of Concord TSA was honored with the Dr. Bob Hanson Distinguished Student Award.
o Jordan Estock from Concord High School was named Chapter Advisor of the Year. (Mr. Estock is pictured at the far right of the photo below.)

Concord student wins Dr. Bob Hanson Distinguished Student AwardConcord High School senior Steven Vanderloo has been selected to receive the Dr. Bob Hanson Distinguished Student Award from TSA, the Technology Student Association. The award, given annually to one student in the United States, recognizes distinction as a student as well as meaningful and active participation in TSA at the local, state, and/or national levels.Steven has served as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Reporter for Delaware TSA. He has been active in TSA since the seventh grade.
Steven will receive his award at the National TSA Conference in June. Hanby Fifth Grader Earns a Spot in the Wilmington Youth Jazz BandElias Smith, a fifth grade student at Hanby Elementary School and member of the District Strings Orchestra, has successfully auditioned for the Wilmington Youth Jazz Band, which allows students ages 10-25 to work with local professional musicians. In the past, the band has performed at such venues as the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, the Grand Opera House, and the Kennedy Center in Washington. Elias is one of two bass players in the band; the other is 22 years old.Congratulations to Elias!Concord HS Science Olympiad Team Ranked Sixth in the StateConcord High School's two teams performed well at the 2012 Science Olympiad in early March, finishing sixth in the state (out of 58 teams competing). This is the third consecutive year that Concord has participated and the third year that Concord has placed in the top 10 teams.Concord's twenty participating students competed in 23 of the 24 events, earning 27 medals in 11 of those events. Two BHS Seniors (identical twins!) Achieve 100 Wins Each in WrestlingCongratulations to twin wrestlers Berkeley and Parker Jones, Brandywine High School seniors who each achieved 100 wins in their wrestling careers. Berkeley earned his 100th career win on January 7, and Parker on January 14.One hundred career wins is a very noteworthy accomplishment for any wrestler, much less two from the same school who happen to be identical twins. After their excellent performance at the State Technology Student Association (TSA) Conference, students from Mt. Pleasant High School, Concord High School, and P.S. duPont Middle School were part of a delegation of 54 Delaware students who competed in the National TSA Conference in Dallas. The students competed against more than 4,000 peers from throughout the world in events that were based on principles and concepts learned throughout the school year in science, technology, engineering, and math.
The Brandywine School District fared extremely well, bringing home the state’s only first place finishes as well as numerous other awards.
National TSA Conference Highlights and Results:
- Mt. Pleasant High School received the Spirit of Service Award for its part in helping to raise nearly $47,000 for the American Cancer Society as part of TSA’s national service project. P.S. duPont was recognized as a Diamond Chapter, and Concord High School was recognized as a Platinum Chapter.
- Concord High School won the Chapter Excellence Award.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.
The Awards continue to be the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Notable past jurors include Francine Prose, Paul Giamatti, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Judy Blume, Paula Poundstone, Lesley Stahl and Billy Collins. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
Also, a special note of congratulations to the English Language Arts teacher of all five students, Mrs. Tracy Selekman, for her encouragement, guidance and support of the writing projects and submission process!
- Mt. Pleasant High School received the Spirit of Service Award for its part in helping to raise nearly $47,000 for the American Cancer Society as part of TSA’s national service project. P.S. duPont was recognized as a Diamond Chapter, and Concord High School was recognized as a Platinum Chapter.
