Two teachers from PS duPont selected for prestigious summer learning program

The P.S. duPont Middle School STEM Learning Center is pleased to announce that teachers Brooks Twilley and John Singer have been selected by Cornell University in New York and Delaware State University to participate in a weeklong professional development program this summer focusing on Bioenergy.  The teachers were selected as part of the Northeast Bioenergy and BioProducts (NBB) Professional Development for Educators program funded through the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture.  The project was one of two funded through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, which set up a sustainable bioenergy challenge to support the development of regional systems for the sustainable production of bioenergy and bio-based products.

Teachers were required to participate in a competitive application process to receive a scholarship and attend the professional development program.  The application stressed the importance of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based education. In addition to having skills in those areas, the ideal candidates for the positions would be "excited about the subject matter." Scholarships were based on 1) demonstrated enthusiasm for the topic area (40%), 2) plans to incorporate the program topic/materials into your classroom (40%), and 3) school located in an underserved district (20%).

The workshop will provide full scholarship packages to 10 educators including workshop registration, teaching kits, workbooks to bring back to your classroom, and a stipend of $500 provided after completion of the program to help defray costs of participation. Educators will leave the workshop with the ability to teach basic bioenergy and bioproducts concepts to other teachers and students in their school using prepared lab kits and interactive white board activities provided by the program. The program provides school year follow-up support to NBB Master Teachers (MTs) using the kits and activities in their school.
